Discover the story of EastEnders: From its groundbreaking beginnings to its twists and turns

Since 1985, BBC One has carried the British soap opera EastEnders. The programme centres on a varied cast of characters who live, work, and play in London’s East End and is set in the fictional borough of Walford. The history of EastEnders will be examined in this look at the show, from its inception to its ongoing influence.

Tony Holland, a television writer, and Julia Smith, a producer, came up with the idea for EastEnders. Previously, the two had collaborated on the enduring BBC drama “The Archers.” In contrast to the melodramatic soaps that were popular at the time, they aimed to develop a new sort of soap opera that was gritty and realistic.

Their goal was to produce a programme that would be based on the realities of working-class life in London’s East End. They sought to investigate topics like unemployment, poverty, and racism that affected their target population. Also, they wanted to include characters that were varied and reflected a variety of experiences and cultures.

On February 19th, 1985, EastEnders debuted with its first episode. Around 17 million people tuned in, making it an immediate success. The opening credits of the programme, which included a slowed-down rendition of the song “Anyone Can Fall in Love,” became recognisable and have hardly changed over time.

EastEnders received plaudits from the start for accurately capturing working-class life. The programme addressed touchy subjects like domestic abuse, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS. Also, it had a diverse cast of characters, including people of colour, LGBTQ+ people, and disabled persons.

Den Watts, who was portrayed by Leslie Grantham in the series, was a central figure in one of its most enduring plotlines. After Angie, his wife, was said to have murdered him off, Den was discovered to still be alive in 1986. One of the most watched programmes in British television history is the one where Den returns and Angie presents him with divorce papers.

The episode from 2001 where Barry Evans, played by Shaun Williamson, was killed off by his wife Janine Butcher is another famous moment in the history of the programme. The producers went to considerable measures to keep the plot a secret from the cast and crew, and the episode was shot in a hotel room in Scotland.

EastEnders has developed and changed over the years to reflect the times. The programme debuted Michael Cashman’s portrayal of Colin Russell in 1987. One of the first openly gay characters on British television, Colin’s plot was revolutionary when it was initially shown.

With the introduction of the Ferreira family in the 1990s, the programme addressed the problem of racism. The narratives of the Ferreiras, the first heavily featured Asian family in the programme, examined the difficulties of residing in a neighbourhood with a large white population.

With plotlines that examine subjects like mental health, sexuality, and gender identity, EastEnders has continued to break new ground in recent years. The character Kyle Slater, played by Riley Carter Millington, came out as transgender in a 2016 episode of the show. The plot received accolades for its delicate depiction of the problems transgender people face.

Despite its popularity, EastEnders has encountered difficulties throughout time. Competition for the programme came from competing soap operas like Emmerdale and Coronation Street in the 1990s. The programme has received criticism more lately for its dropping viewership and erratic storylines.

But EastEnders is still a steadfast component of British popular culture. Several actors, including Ross Kemp, Letitia Dean, and Barbara Windsor, have used it as a springboard for their careers. Also, it has given rise to spin-off programmes.
