We can’t believe that it’s been 30 years since 1989! This was the year that saw the tragic Hillsborough disaster take place at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield which sadly saw 96 people crushed to death. It was also the same year that George Bush senior became president of the United States of America whilst serial killer Ted Bundy was executed.
In somewhat more light news, Sky TV was launched in the UK this year and the Nintendo GameBoy was originally first released in Japan and then in North America in July.
With that in mind here is the look back at 10 songs that we cannot believe turn 30 years old this year….
10. ‘Licence to Kill’ – Gladys Knight
This song was written and recorded for the James Bond film of the same name License to Kill, also released in 1989. It’s peaked at number 6 on the UK singles charts and was sung by the Legendary Gladys Knight
9. ‘Express Yourself’ – Madonna
This song was a smash hit for Madonna from her fourth studio album called ‘Like a Prayer’. It’s peaked at number 5 on the UK charts back in 1989.
8. ‘Manchild’ – Neneh Cherry
Neneh Cherry was a huge star of the 1980s in the UK. ‘Man child’ is the 1989 single that was released from her debut album called ‘Raw like Sushi’. This managed to reach number 5 in the UK charts.
7. ‘Paradise City’ – Guns N Roses
This song by American rock band Guns N’ Roses featured on the album called Appetite for Destruction released in 1987 in America.
6. ‘Do they Know it’s Christmas?’ – Bob Geldof for Band Aid
This song has this distinction of being written three times, the first time came right here in 1989. It peaked at number 1 in the charts and was one of the years biggest selling singles.
5. ‘Another Day in Paradise’ – Phil Collins
Very famous song recorded by Phil Collins, the former drummer for the band Genesis who had recently launched a new solo career. This song picked up number 2 on the UK singles chart.
4. ‘Leave me Alone’ – Michael Jackson
This song by King of Pop Michael Jackson, was off of the world famous Bad album. It reached number 2 in the UK singles chart is back in 1989.
3. ‘Back to Life’ – Soul II Soul
This Legendary song from UK R&B band Soul II Soul was released in May 1989. It was taken from their album ‘Club Classics Volume One’.
2. ‘Eternal Flame’ – The Bangles
This song was released by American pop rock group, The Bangles. It was taken from the 1988 album called ‘Everything.’ It was a massive hit in 1989 and reach number 1 on the UK singles chart.
1. ‘Ride on Time – Black Box
This song was released by Italian Dance music group, Black Box. It was the biggest selling single of the year and reached number one on the official UK singles chart.
